Remodeling your home can be a long and stressful process; or so we’ve been told. But, it doesn’t necessarily have to be! In order to eliminate stress for all those living within the walls of the home being remodeled, you’re going to need to implement some strategies to effectively get the job done.
1. Make your game plan
The first step you should take is to lay out your game plan. In this step you are going to sit down with all parties involved and decide what you want to remodel. Next, you will decide what is most important on the remodel list. This room or space gets a number 1 next to it. Then you will use this numbering system and put the number of importance next to each space to be remodeled. This will also help you decide when you are going to remodel each space. Chances are you’re not going to be able to afford to do it all at once so going in order of importance will help you decide what to do and when.
2. Create a Budget
You may not think you need to make a budget but it’s going to be the best thing you can do to eliminate stress and unneeded spending. Once you start making quick runs to the store here and there to pick up supplies, things are going to add up fast. Even if you have an idea in your mind of how much you’re going to spend, you will most likely go above and beyond that if you don’t stick to a written budget.
3. Can you DIY?
Before you start looking for contractors to come in and do the work for you, you can save some money, and maybe even time by doing some of the prep work yourself. Jobs such as tearing up carpet, stripping wallpaper, tearing out old appliances and painting are all things you can probably manage to do on your own. So before you pay the big bucks for a professional do come do it, ask first, “Can I do it myself?”.
4. Get References
Believe me, when it comes to hiring contractors, let’s just put it this way, there are a lot of fish in the sea! You are going to be bombarded with different offers and sales pitches and it’s all up to you to decide who is best for you. Definitely ask for references and be sure to call them. Stay on guard and try to notice anything about to company that seems fishy. There are a lot of honest companies out there but there are those who are out to rip you off as well. Make sure you don’t make a mistake that could have been avoidable.
5. Keep the leftovers
Make sure the contractors leave behind some extra paint for touch ups or duplicating later on. Ceramic tile is also another thing you’re going to want extras of, this way if a tile cracks it can be replaced with a new one.
